Inspiration for the Main Storyline
First of all, I will admit, I get a little embarrassed when I go back and read my debut book "Pleasure's Spear" which was released in April of 2019. Especially during the sexual moments in the book... I'm typically a conservative person when it comes to those things. Not politically though. I get to those parts and think, "OH MY GOD?! Did I write that?!" ...evidently, yes...
Anyways, back to the real reason of this story. What was the inspiration behind my first book? I was actually in the middle of working on my book "Curse of the Possessed Bus: Part One." For short we'll just call it COTPB series. That was originally going to be my first book. I had been working on COTPB for quite some time. However, while I was writing my mind decided to bring up some undesirable memories. I couldn't focus on COTPB at the moment.
I opened a new file and began typing away. After a couple hours, I had a basic storyline in place. "Pleasure's Spear" is about a young woman who has to battle against her father's hatred towards her sexuality. It's a story of Mandy's fight to stay true to herself and not give in to the hatred.
The father in this story, Lee, is based off of my first girlfriend's mother. She was a kind lady. Treated me respectfully. Until, she found out I was a lesbian. From that moment, she began making my life a literal living hell! Making false claims to the police to the point the police told her to "get a life woman!" I will not go into too much detail, but she was crazy!
My first girlfriend and I tried to hide our relationship from her mother. We did for awhile. Until, one of our friends spoke up! If eyes could kill, I'd be dead. I still remember the look of pure evil glaring at me from her mother. She got up and rushed over to me screaming "You turned my daughter into a F**" A 3-letter queer slang word I refuse to write or say. Truth is, her daughter, my first girlfriend, dated another female before me....so....
It turned out to be a rough two year relationship. I wanted to break up with my girlfriend without seeming like an asshole. It was rough only because of her mother. My girlfriend tried breaking ties with her, but it didn't work. Which is sad that there are so many situations where parents don't accept their children for who they are.
Ultimately, I did break up with my first girlfriend. For two reasons, I just couldn't take the threatening phone calls from her mother. Plus, my girlfriend had gotten pregnant. Obviously, she had cheated.
Want to know the most bizarre thing? Her mother BLAMED ME for getting her daughter pregnant?! Yes, that's how crazy she was!
Diversity and Inclusive is Key
In the story "Pleasure's Spear" I did my best to be as inclusive as I could to different members of the queer community. There are queer people in every race, nationality, gender, religion, political background and many queer people have different physical capabilities.
I wanted to create a story that included at lease one character that almost everyone could relate to. ALMOST everyone. My goal was to make the characters in the story come across others that you may encounter in the real world. We all know, not everyone is the same in the "real world."
Queer Community Hardships
I also made sure I included a few events in the book that hit the queer community hard. I made it a point to put a warning in the beginning of the book. Things such as:
Trying to be accepted for who you are
Dealing with those who don't accept you
Domestic Violence
Suicide
Discrimination at the workplace and in public
All of these issues are extremely serious! And SHOULD NOT be taken lightly. In "Pleasure's Spear," it tells how the main character handles these extreme situations and remains strong through it all.
